Sustainability
Many companies are
beginning to adopt a positive view of a sustainable future.
To help achieve this new vision, they are beginning to create
strategies for sustainability and corporate responsibility.
Sustainability is on the forefront of people’s minds not only
due to growing public awareness, but also because of drivers
like socially responsible investments and demands by
non-government organizations (NGOs). Some companies focus on
sustainability or corporate responsibility strategy at the
corporate level. However, in order to make it operational and
successful at the local employee level, this strategy has to
be driven down to the facility level. Sustainability must
become part of what every employee does every day and part of
every business decision.
When CAPACCIO was
formed in 1992, we created the mission statement, “Helping
Industry and the Environment Prosper.” This mission was based
on our belief that industry acts as a steward for the
environment by developing social well-being for its employees
and the communities where it conducts its operations, and
making contributions to community development and prosperity.
With our mission
in mind, CAPACCIO created the “Five Basics of Sustainability.”
These steps are used to help our clients improve their
business operations and also address their responsibilities to
the environment, social equity and economic prosperity. The
Five Basics are as follows:
-
Comply with
legal responsibilities and use management systems to both
assure compliance and drive sustainability by the way the
business is operated
-
Address the
three responsibilities – environmental stewardship, social
equity and well being, and economic viability
-
Use risk
management and business continuity
-
Address
performance through the use of leading indicators associated
with business excellence programs
-
Strive for
continual improvement in all of these areas

Sustainability
Philosophy
CAPACCIO’S sustainability philosophy is built around eight
principles:
-
Lead by example, provide clear direction,
build organizational alignment and focus on the
sustainability strategy and vision
-
Understand what stakeholders and markets
value now and in the future and use this understanding
to drive the design and sale of products and services
-
Continuously improve the activities using
an integrated management system
-
Develop and value peoples’ capabilities
and direct their skill, resourcefulness and creativity
to change and improve the organization
-
Develop agility and resilience in the
marketplace using a culture of continual improvement,
innovation and learning
-
Improve operational performance through
the use of data, information and knowledge to understand
variability and to improve strategic and operational
decision-making
-
Behave in an ethically, socially and
environmentally responsible manner
-
Focus on both leading indicators of
performance as well as key performance (lagging)
indicators, values and outcomes
Sustainability involves not only the company’s operations, but
also the life cycle of the resources that it uses in its
operations and the full life cycle of its products. Everything
that the company accomplishes in the name of sustainability is
reviewed through stakeholder engagement.

Services
Capaccio provides the following
sustainability related services:
Sustainability Awareness Training
CAPACCIO offers a number of classroom,
on-line, and webinar courses to help develop
sustainability awareness at your company. These courses
are customized to meet the specific sustainability issues
that you would like to address in your program.
Information comes from the popular Harvard University
distance learning course, “Strategies for Sustainability
Management.”
Sustainability Assessments
CAPACCIO offers on-line employee surveys, facility visits or
focused on-site workshops to help companies assess how they
are addressing the Five Basics. We focus on creating a
“roadmap” to drive the organization to a higher level of
sustainability. This service provides an effective means to
get the company started with a baseline survey or it can be
used to provide a means for determining the effectiveness of
the sustainability program. We use the ADRI (approach,
deployment, results and improvement) method for scoring the
key elements of the sustainability program. Radar plots are
used to graphically portray the improvements in each of these
components. CAPACCIO also offers benchmarking and footprint
analysis.
Sustainability Management Systems
CAPACCIO facilitates the integration of quality,
environmental, and occupational health and safety management
system standards (ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001) to provide
a foundation for a sustainability program. We can add
components from any of the following management system
standards to your integrated management system: ISO 26000
(draft social responsibility standard), ISO 31000 (risk
management standard), ISO 51001 (draft energy management
standard), BS 8900 (British Standard’s sustainability
standard) and AS 8303 (Australian Standard’s corporate
responsibility standard).
Stakeholder Engagement Programs
CAPACCIO facilitates the development of an inventory of
stakeholders and helps map the influence of each stakeholder.
We can develop a stakeholder engagement program that will help
you maintain what is referred to as your social “license to
operate.” CAPACCIO offers tools for stakeholder engagement
programs. When managed properly, stakeholder engagement can
become a viable source of new sustainability program ideas.
Sustainability Program Development
CAPACCIO facilitates the development of a foundation to create
sustainability within your organization. All of the
sustainability initiatives are developed with employee
involvement and vetted using stakeholder engagement. Projects
have management approved action plans and are tracked on a
profit/loss basis. Corrective actions and preventive actions
are included with the sustainability initiatives in the
program development activity and review. A well-coordinated
sustainability program will drive your continual improvement.
Sustainability Reporting
CAPACCIO facilitates the process of selecting leading and
lagging indicators for use in developing your sustainability
program and for reporting your progress to key stakeholders.
We offer a scoring method based on the application of proven
business excellence frameworks and sustainability scorecards
based on the balanced scorecard method. CAPACCIO offers
training to our clients to create an assurance standard and
internal audit against this standard to ensure the objectivity
of this publicly available non-financial report.
