Course Summaries

Ammonia and Nitrogen Treatment and Removal
Thursday September 14, 2017 (9:00 am - 11:30 am)
Recent developments and monitoring of water quality has begun to identify ammonia and other nitrogen based compounds as pollutants of concern. Certain levels of these compounds are ideal for plant and algae growth. However, elevated levels along with other factors; pH, temperature, and the compound’s form, can be toxic.
The goal of this 2 ½ hour presentation is to assist operators with understanding and operating ammonia and nitrogen compound removal systems. The presentation will delve into the concerns/environmental effects as well as treatment methods for these pollutants.

Carbon...Not Just for Dating
Thursday September 14, 2017 (1:00 pm - 3:00 pm)
Carbon is one of the simplest of the chemical elements and is the base material for many items used everyday. In this presentation, students will review elemental carbon and discover activated carbon and how it is used in water and wastewater treatment - from pre-treating city water to removing harmful organics from wastewater effluent. In addition, we will review a case study describing the design development of an activated carbon system used to remove mercury from industrial wastewater.
Learn how activated carbon is prepared, how it works, and how it is used in wastewater treatment to purify water.

How to Design a Wastewater Treatment System
Thursday September 21, 2017 (9:00 am - 11:30 am)
I have a source of wastewater that requires treatment. What is the procedure? How does one determine the required level of treatment? How does one determine what treatment processes are suitable? How does one determine if existing treatment systems can be modified or if new processes are required? These are often puzzling questions when operators are faced with a new source of wastewater. This presentation will provide the operators with an introduction to treatment system design. The discussion will cover how wastewater characteristics are determined, how treatability testing is conducted, and how the conceptual design is developed into construction plans.

Treatability Testing for Wastewater Treatment Operators
Thursday September 21, 2017 (1:00 pm - 3:00 pm)
Changes in production operations, such as raw materials, chemicals, operating temperatures, etc., can often affect the ability of an existing wastewater treatment system to perform as designed. The modified process operations may require minor adjustments to the existing system or the introduction of a new treatment chemical. Treatability testing is a method of determining the potential impacts that a wastewater treatment system modification, such as increasing a dosing rate or switching to a different treatment chemical will have prior to implementing the change on a full-scale.
This course provides an overview on when to consider conducting a treatability study, how to identify the variables to be tested, and how to develop a treatability protocol. Participants will be given an example of a treatability issue and asked to determine how to approach and conduct a treatability test for the given situation.

CAPACCIO has developed a self-paced course to prepare wastewater treatment operators for the Massachusetts certification exam. The course consists of an introduction and eight modules that can be navigated at your own pace, and includes quizzes to measure progress.

After completing the self-study portion of the course you will attend two 5-hour classroom sessions taught by one of our instructors at our Marlborough, Massachusetts offices to review the course material, ask questions, take practice exams and further prepare you for taking the licensing exam. Each of these "live" sessions is approved for 5 TCHs.

Registration Details: Self-Paced WWT Operator Exam Prep Training

Register now and you will receive our self-study CD and the California State University "Industrial Waste Treatment" Volume I, Third Edition textbook. You will also be enrolled in our upcoming review sessions to be held on Fridays September 15th and September 22nd, however we will be holding review sessions periodically throughout the year and attendance can be deferred to a future date if desired.

Enrollment options:

Training is conducted at your facility to evaluate your current wastewater treatment system and identify ways to optimize existing systems. This course is 6 hours-MassDEP approved for TCH.

On-Site Evaluation and Optimization Course

For those operators who need training contact hours (TCHs) but find it difficult to attend off-site training and who are looking for ways to reduce operating costs...this course is for you.

CAPACCIO will visit your facility to conduct a wastewater treatment system evaluation and optimization. An experienced engineer will meet with your wastewater treatment operations staff and assist in evaluating and identifying ways to optimize existing systems. Training will begin with the development of process flow diagrams for existing operations, followed by a review of existing treatment operations and equipment. We will assist operators in understanding how the existing system works and identify opportunities to minimize wastewater flows and maximize treatment efficiency.

This course is a 6 hour MassDEP-approved TCH course and is billed at a flat rate regardless of the number of operators who attend from your firm.

Custom Training Options

We provide cost-effective training for clients that have several operators covering multiple shifts, which saves money and reduces production down time.
